Submitting Your Application Form

A key part of your application is an online form that captures information about you and your educational/professional background. You cannot save and return to this form. Please be prepared to submit the full application with all of your required documents.

Please review our programs eligibility and requirements guide before proceeding. Your application requirements will change depending on your application status and the program(s) for which you apply. To determine your status, please refer to your invitational email from the Hertog Foundation, if applicable.

  • Standard applicants are applying directly to the Foundation fellowships, without a nomination or invitational email. You should submit all application components, including at least one letter of recommendation.
  • Nominated applicants were referred to the Hertog Foundation by a professor, professional mentor, or Hertog alum. Your nomination counts as your letter of recommendation.
  • Hertog alumni and finalists from previous application cycles (Sponsored or Expedited) are eligible to apply with a fast-tracked application. Please refer to your invitational email for instructions on how and what to submit.

References or Letters of Recommendation

Are you submitting references or letter(s) of recommendation to accompany your application? Please read the following carefully:

  • Humanities-only and Nominated Summer applicants will provide the name and contact information for two academic or personal references.
  • Standard applications to our Summer fellowships require at least one letter of recommendation to complete their application.
  • References / letters of recommendation are waived for Hertog alumni and Sponsored and Expedited applicants, except those applying to War Studies.
  • All applicants to the War Studies Program must submit TWO letters of recommendation, regardless of their application status.

For applicants submitting letter(s) of recommendation, you will provide the name and contact information for up to two recomenders. Your recommender(s) will be contacted upon the completion of your application requesting a letter for your file and using the email address you provide. It is your responsibility to remain in contact with the individual(s) you ask for letter(s) of recommendation and ensure they submit those letters by the deadline.

Uploading Required Documents

To complete your application, applicants will need to submit the following documents:

  • A clear and appropriate Headshot (jpg or png preferred)
  • A CV or résumé
  • An unofficial academic transcript(s), if currently enrolled or recent graduate
  • A statement of interest in your selected fellowship program(s).
  • An academic or professional writing sample

Please save your files as PDFs and name these files using your last name and the type of document (e.g., Tolstoy_resume.pdf or Tolstoy_headshot.jpg).

All applications that are fully submitted receive an email notification confirming the submission.

To ensure efficient notification, please make sure that emails from fellowships@hertogfoundation.org and info@hertogfoundation.org are not being caught in your spam filter.
