Please read these directions carefully, and review this chart describing program eligibility and application components. If you have other questions, check our FAQs page before contacting Hertog staff. You will be asked to fill out an online application form consisting of basic information and to upload PDF or Word files of required documents.

Did you receive an email from Hertog staff alerting you of Nominated, Sponsored, or Expedited status? Your email includes a personalized link with instructions. You can also review this chart to see what application components you should submit.

Submitting Your Application Form

A key part of your application is an online form that captures information about you and your educational/professional background. You cannot save and return to this form. Please be prepared to submit the full application with all of your required documents.

All applications that are fully submitted receive an email notification confirming the submission.

To ensure efficient notification, please make sure that emails from fellowships@hertogfoundation.org and info@hertogfoundation.org are not being caught in your spam filter.

Uploading Required Documents

To complete your application, applicants will need to submit the following documents (PDF preferred, .doc also accepted):

  • A clear and appropriate Headshot (jpg or png preferred)
  • A CV or résumé
  • An unofficial Academic Transcript from all colleges or universities you have attended (currently enrolled students or recent grads only)
  • Statement of Interest for virtual programs and/or a Personal Statement for residential programs
  • An academic or professional Writing Sample that meets the guidelines of your selected program(s)

Please name these files using your last name and the type of document (e.g., Tolstoy_resume.pdf or Tolstoy_headshot.jpg).

Submitting References

Depending on your program choice, you will submit contact information for one or two references. In addition, for some programs, you will include Letters of Recommendations from your references. (See program requirements.)

Please provide the name, title, and contact information for your reference and/or letter-writer(s). Your reference should be able to speak to your qualifications for our program as well as your interest in political thought, public policy, humanities and/or foreign affairs.

If you are applying to the War Studies Program, you must submit two references with letters.

If you are submitting a letter(s), You can provide contact information for your recommender, and they will receive an email with information on how to submit a letter.
