Rather than simply butting heads with the public, Gingrich-style, conservatives need to take a hard look at the factors that keep demand for government high, particularly among the working-class voters who are increasingly central to the conservative coalition—the instability of health care coverage, the stagnation of wages among the non-college educated population, the rising cost of home-ownership and child-rearing.
